Spring Break sent us south to Waco, Texas to visit our son Clayton who is a junior at Baylor. We had an absolutely delightful time. We went to Cameron Park, Common Grounds and even had dinner at The Coffee Shop Cafe'-- President George W. Bush's favorite eatery near Crawford! (Hail to the chief and the fried okra!)
Probably the biggest "touristy" highlight for me was visiting the Armstrong Browning Library on the campus of Baylor University. It's a 19th-century research center honoring Victorian poets Robert and Elizabeth Barrett Browning. It features the world's largest collection of Browning material. Since I am such a crazy fan of dead authors, I was totally jazzed about this beautiful, inspiring place. It is charming and interesting and is definitely worth a visit when you're in the area. Did you know that between them, they wrote 573 love letters to each other before they married? Amazing.
Here are two quotes you may recognize from the poets. Robert, who was very optimistic for a Victorian- era poet wrote:
"Grow old along with me! The best is yet to be, the last of life, for which the first was made. Our times are in his hand who saith, 'A whole I planned, youth shows but half; Trust god: See all, nor be afraid!'"
And Elizabeth, who was quite an independent-minded Victorian woman, wrote:
"If thou must love me, let it be for nought
Except for love's sake only. Do not say,
'I love her for her smile . . . her look . . . her way
Of speaking gently . . . for a trick of thought
That falls in well with mine, and, certes, brought
A sense of pleasant ease on such a day'
For these things in themselves, Beloved, may
Be changed, or change for thee- and love, so wrought,
May be unwrought so."
Ah, beautiful, isn't it?
After Waco, I traveled to speak at Extraordinary Women in Greenville, SC. It was...was...well, extraordinary! It was extraordinary because of the women who attended and spoke. I was so enriched. I was with "Mama T" aka Thelma Wells and she always makes me happy just to hear her laugh. I was with Lysa TerKeurst and she encouraged all to see how the Messiah takes our mess and makes it a message of hope. Chonda Pierce is like therapy to me! She makes me laugh so hard, and it's certainly more entertaining than crying in a counselor's office and much cheaper. God really has created some extraordinary women! But, girl, I must tell you the big heart surprise I found was Candace Cameron Bure. She played DJ on Full House as a child and currently stars in ABC's Family "Make it or Break It." Her genuine spirit was so captivating and her message blew me away. Her candid, wise, vulnerable rendering of truth was refreshing and unique to what I often hear at Christian conferences. If you haven't heard her, check her out. You will not be disappointed in her depth and boldness.
I found a great filtered water bottle that traveled with me this month, and I saved lots of money not having to buy $3 water bottles in airports and hotels! (Leaves more cash for chocolate!) And, of course, it's more environmentally wise to use. It's the "bobble" and it made tap water in Atlanta, Greenville and Waco taste excellent! It's lightweight and not very expensive. I am sold--just don't call me a bobble head!
Well, that's about it... for now!
So, give these things a taste test:
1. Armstrong Browning Library, Baylor University
2. Extraordinary Women Conference
3. Candace Cameron Bure
4. The bobble (filtered water bottle)
