Here’s the way I practice the formula for rest.
1. Divert daily:
I usually do this by listening to a book. It’s my very favorite thing to do! If I get to divert myself in the afternoon, I brew a cup of PG Tips British Tea to sip along with the listening!
Sometimes my daily divertion happens at night…I will go to bed thirty minutes early and listen to a book. The cell phone is silent, the lights are out,--rest…rest…rest!
The other thing I do to divert myself daily is to email friends. I have a couple of gals with whom I email quotes and deeper thoughts. I love it. It lets my mind take a vacation from my daily routine and go to deeper places and find broader thinking.
2. Weekly withdrawal:
My usual weekly withdrawal consists of time with a friend. As long as I get some alone-time during the week, I am ready for a little time with the girls! Shopping, coffee or lunch, or even inviting a family over for dinner works for me.
During the spring, my weekly withdrawal is spent in front of the TV! Yes, I am an American Idol fan! As the season progresses, we even have “watch parties!”
3. Abandon annually:
Because I travel a lot, a trip to another hotel or a ride on another plane isn’t very restful! My annual abandonment happens in the month of August--I try not to take any speaking engagements. Just the simple absence of traveling to speak serves to revitalize me. We have company over to the house. I clean out closets. I take time to ponder my life and the coming year and just play!
Another annual abandonment I take advantage of is going to my friends’ home every Labor Day weekend. They live in
I also go on a girls' weekend each year with a couple of gal pals. Beach condos, shopping sprees, presidential libraries, and fancy hotels have all been places where we take a breather!
